Stone sculptures for North Shields’ regeneration

Stone focal point

Our commission by Sum.Place to carve two ships monkey fist knots has been installed in North Shields, as part of the regeneration of the riverside town. Lead artist, Colin Davies designed the knots as part of a larger project featuring three art interventions, all inspired by the town’s heritage.

The knots, one from Kilkenny black fossil granite and the other from Carrara marble have been placed on concrete plinths, and form the focal point of the reimagined town square. Historically they were used to weigh down a rope to make it easier to throw it from a ship to the line handler on the dock.

Colin Davies initially came to us as he had seen that we could take his 3D files, and carve the knots on our 5 axis CNC machine, before finishing them by hand.
