what lies beneath
13th October 2016
The Roman temple of Mithras is located underneath the Bloomberg's new European Headquarters in the City of London, which was awarded the 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture.
Discovered in 1954 during a bombsite clearing, the temple was dismantled and temporarily reconstructed on a site about 100m away. When the site was made safe again, before the new building was constructed, Bloomberg undertook the restoration of the temple to its original location and created a free public museum giving access to it.
stoneCIRCLE was subcontracted by PAYE to inscribe lettering and a representation of original planimetry in Black Granite panels. The panels, supplied by PAYE, were placed at the entrance of the archaeological site.
The carved inscriptions worked on by stoneCIRCLE give the historical information and a timeline of the various depths as you descend the stairs to the Roman temple, which now lies seven metres below the surface.
