Normandy Campaign Memorial
The curves of the granite memorial are reminiscent of the Normandy coastline.
The Normandy Campaign Memorial commemorates all who took part in the D-Day Landings.
It was produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the campaign, and was unveiled by HRH the Duke of Gloucester during a service of dedication attended by around 500 veterans and invited guests.
Ian Stewart CM designed the 30 foot long memorial. The curves of the back section are based on the geological undulations of the Normandy coastline as seen from offshore.
He chose granite as the material to represent the severity of the task facing the invasion force.
The blocks of polished Chinese granite had to be moved into place using a 35 tonne crane as the front block weighs around 2.5 tonnes and the 9” thick back section around 5 tonnes.
